Paint Your Own Delft Tile

Paint Your Own Delft Tile

October's Monthly Mini Painting Kit was inspired by Dutch Delftware. The Delft tile originated in the mid-17th century in Delft, a city in the Netherlands. While traditional Delftware is created with clay and glaze, you can create your own Dutch-inspired tile art at home with less than $10 of supplies and your oven.

This summer, one of my best friends got married and I painted a set of these tiles as a wedding gift for her and her partner. The process was so easy I decided it would make the perfect Mini Painting Kit tie-in project for you! For this project, you'll need:

  • 4x4" ceramic tile from the hardware store (I got mine from The Home Depot for $.10 each, but you can find this at any hardware store for pennies).
  • Pebeo Porcelaine 150 ceramic paint in Ming Blue (Less than $8 here on Amazon)
  • A small paintbrush
  • Tray for baking & oven

Wipe down your tiles and simply paint your design onto the front. Let them dry for 24 hours and then bake them in your oven. As per the Pebeo instructions, I placed mine in a cool oven and baked for 35 minutes once the oven reached 300F.

Once you remove the tile and let it cool, the ceramic will be dishwasher and food-safe. If you're anything like me, you'll want to paint all the ceramic dish ware within reach immediately.

As a bonus, you can use wooden artists panels upside down as a cheap frame option. They tend to come in standard square sizes that fit tiles well. I got mine at Blick.

The nice thing about using this paint on a pre-glazed tile is that you can wipe off any mistakes before you put it in the oven. If you want to practice your artwork further before painting on a tile, watercolor and gouache on paper are great options. Check out the monthly Mini Painting Kit and try it for yourself!
